SEC names Mississippi State McWhorter Award Nominees

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (April 20, 2023) - William Wann of the Mississippi State men's golf team and Emma Antonaki of the Bulldogs' women's tennis team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by Mississippi State University.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2023 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on May 2.

Highlights of Mississippi State's nominees include:

 William Wann, Mississippi State Golf Business Administration
  • SEC Academic Honor Roll, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022
  • Bulldog Honor Roll (3.0) -seven consecutive semesters / every semester of attendance,
  • Fall 2019, Spring 2020, Fall 2020, Spring 2021, Fall 2021, Spring 2022, Fall 2022
  • Will graduate in Spring 2023 with bachelor's degree in business administration
  • Won the men's and women's combined best ball event with Julia Lopez Ramirez at the
    Blessings Collegiate Invitational in October 2022
  • Three career top-30 finishes
  • Four of his six career rounds of par or better were carded during the 2022-23 regular season,
    competing in four events (two as an individual)
  • Shot a 69 in the second round on his home course at the Mossy Oak Collegiate

  • Earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in Spring of 2022 (3.87 GPA)
  • Earning Master of Science in Sports administration (4.00 GPA)

  • Two-time Academic All-SEC, 2020, 2021

  • Newson Award Winner: Overall student-athlete of the year award for all sports at MSU,

  • ITA All-American, 2021
  • ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year, 2019
  • First Team All-SEC, 2021
  • Two-time Second Team All-SEC, 2019, 2022
  • All-time leader in MSU history for career singles wins. Earned the No. 1 spot with her
    92nd win (currently sits at 96), 2023
  • Has 27 career wins over ranked opponents
  • Achieved 20 singles wins and 20 doubles wins in a single seasons two times, 2019 and 2022

The SEC provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are announced in May, as well as honored by the league membership at SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Fla.

Last year's McWhorter Award recipients were Mississippi State football student-athlete Austin Williams and Lisa Gunnarsson of the LSU women's track & field team.
